Latest Chicago Tribune Coverage

Our campaign continues to draw attention to the embattled Wilmette Park District. Today, the Tribune published another article, this time emphasizing the community’s response to the fence at Gillson Park’s South Beach and the district’s willful lack of communication, contrasted with surveys for far less impactful decisions. You can read the full article here: Wilmette Park District looks to avoid backlash after erecting fences at Gillson Park’s South Beach earlier this year.

That’s definitely a key piece of feedback that we constantly hear from the public that (says) ‘I didn’t know about this.’

This action of fencing and fees is extremely discriminatory and inhumane considering the handsome amount of funding this Park District already receives!!! 🤔There is no loss for hiring additional life guards either! That’s why they didn’t want anyone to know and yes, they violated the Open Meetings Act! This is shameful and disgusting! This is so arrogant! After 100 years of total freedom, it is inexcusable to do any of this to the public!

My heaviest feeling about all this in my opinion thus far, is that this decision was influenced by mindlessness towards others not as affluent and/or sympathetic towards the values of enjoying nature resulting in absolute selfishness by the Park District Board individuals. It’s evident by not informing not even its residents! More often then not, there is no consciousness of others in a less affluent position across many communities in our nation. I never felt that way about Wilmette Park District until now. It has left me with a rotten feeling in my stomach about these decision makers who have made a horrible decision and mark on themselves regarding their public reflection on a beautiful preserved community that showed a fine example of what America is for a celebration of 100 years! Think about that! I believe I speak for many who echo the same sentiment.

I seriously can’t believe this has gone on all summer. And they’re sticking to that story about police being called multiple times last year?? It’s just not true. The optics and the feel of this unilateral decision by this board will result in a sea change come election time next spring. As a new, previously uninvolved resident, I plan to pay rapt attention. They absolutely ruined what was once a happy place for many.
