We’re excited to share that in addition to all three major news networks, radio, and even nationwide coverage, Monday’s demonstration at Gillson Beach was covered by The Record North Shore. Our Labor Day protest gathered nearly 60 dedicated supporters who marched along the lakefront with picket signs, chants, and songs, demanding the removal of the new fence and fees that restrict access to our beloved beach.
As summer came to a close, our community made one last statement to show the Park District that we won’t be silenced. The energy among beach spectators and participants was palpable, with many beachgoers clapping and cheering as we marched by. As Anastasia Royal, a regular at our protests, said, “We had many people there, and many [beachgoers] were clapping along the route… It was neat to see.”

With this powerful demonstration, we continued our summer-long protest against the Park District’s unnecessary and restrictive measures, which have limited access to the lakefront for more vulnerable community members, including those who are less mobile and financially secure.
Though the fence has been taken down for the offseason, the Park District has not yet committed to removing the fence and fees in 2025.
