The Unfence Gillson campaign to preserve open access to Gillson Park’s south beach is gaining major traction! We’re thrilled to share that the movement was recently featured in the Daily Mail, an internationally renowned publication.
In their article, “Wealthy residents of idyllic Illinois town left furious as council erects ‘eye-sore fence’ that blocks stunning views of the lakefront from their mansions – and starts charging beachgoers,” the Daily Mail highlights the community’s outrage over the Wilmette Park District’s decision to construct fencing along the beach area.
The piece calls out how the fencing is an affront to the vision of the famed architect Daniel Burnham, who advocated for keeping Chicago’s lakefront “forever open, clear and free” for all to enjoy. It quotes local residents expressing frustration that the obstructive fencing diminishes the natural beauty, restricts access for many including seniors and those with disabilities, and deprives people of being able to freely take in the open vistas.
This international coverage is a major win for our grassroots movement! It shines a global spotlight on the need to #UnfenceGillson and reopen the south beach area as the open, welcoming public space it has been for generations.
However, our work is not done. We must keep this momentum going strong. Please read and share the Daily Mail article far and wide. Sign and promote our petition calling for the permanent removal of the fencing. And continue voicing your support directly to the Wilmette Park District board.
Together, we can ensure Gillson Park’s south beach remains forever open, clear and free for all to enjoy, in line with Burnham’s vision. The world is watching, and our engaged activism will be heard!
